Who are Swing Out Sister?
Formed in 1984, Swing Out Sister are Corinne Drewery (vocals) and Andy Connell (keyboards); the third original member was Martin Jackson (drums), who left in 1989. Corinne and Andy have been supported by a number of loyal, talented musicians for recording and live concerts. Their music brings together soul, jazz, film-soundtrack music, and sunshine pop with sublime production. To date, they have released 10 studio albums, and most of them were produced by Paul O’Duffy. To this day, Swing Out Sister still has a healthy ‘cult’ following around the world, particularly in Japan, where they are pop music ‘royalty’. Their concerts still generally sell out.
What’s in the book?
This 300+ pages book is a tribute to Swing Out Sister by a dedicated fan who has followed the band since first hearing the song “Breakout” in 1986. It tells their story from the band’s formation until May 2024, which is the cut-off date.
To my knowledge, as of 2024 there have been no books written exclusively about Swing Out Sister. This is the main reason I decided to write this book; the old adage “if you want something done, do it yourself.”
This fan tribute biography is based on original magazine and music paper articles and on-line searches, including published interviews with Corinne and Andy. In addition, I have woven in my personal memories throughout this story.
There is a comprehensive discography, which defines the main catalogue numbers for UK releases and notes the main variations for releases worldwide.
There is a comprehensive listing of the Swing Out Sister concerts around the world from 1986 until March 2024.
There is a comprehensive listing of Swing Out Sister appearances on television, and TV shows and films where their music has provided the soundtrack or has featured.
The story is lavishly illustrated with the author’s personal Swing Out Sister memorabilia collection.
Although this is an unauthorised ‘biography’ of Swing Out Sister, Corinne and Andy are aware this book was being written, through the author’s correspondence with their manager, Jamie Spencer (see their message in the Home page)
